Need to Know Info:

By registering, you are agreeing with the following. Failure to comply could result in dismissal from the team.

1. Registration Fee Rise

Registration fees will go up $20 as of April 16th, and up $25 as of 6/2, due to ASA late fees. All ASA fees are subject to a $2 per swimmer service fee. For the sake of simplicity, the ASA fees are essentially $42 per swimmer prior to April 16, $62 per swimmer between April 16 and June 2, and $67 per swimmer after June 2. (NOTE: ASA fees are non-negotiable. ASA is our league program and this is their cost to be part of the league as defined by their structure.)

2. Refund Policy
Registration fees are refundable under the following guidelines:

  • Prior to the first day of practice on May 4th: 100% refund
  • Prior to May 18th: 50% refund
  • After May 18th: No Refund

Note that with any refund, non-resident fees ($50 per swimmer), convenience fees and credit card fees will NOT be reimbursed.

3. Non-Grand Cascades Resident Participation

Like many other communities, Grand Cascades is private and not an “open to the public” facility. We have an out of neighborhood fee of $50* per swimmer for anyone who does not live in the Grand Cascades. *This fee is NON-NEGOTIABLE! Our community does have a CAP to the number of out-of-neighborhood participants.  In additional to the fee, Grand Cascades HOA and the RAPIDS reserve the right to refuse a non-resident or out-of-neighborhood swimmer/family participation at any time.

Non-resident swimmers and their parent(s) or guardian(s) are expected to leave all Grand Cascades’ amenities and facilities immediately after their practices and may not enter the premises more than 30 minutes before their practice times.

4. Parent Volunteers:

Families are required to volunteer at least 12 hours per season with one of the shifts (3-4 hours) being served in a swimmer bullpen. Opportunities are posted on our team calendar and arise daily.

5. Photographs

Photographs, videos, etc. will be taken of all the swimmers throughout the season for our year end slide shows and awards. If you do not want your child to appear in any of the photos/videos published, notify our Team Director.

GRAND CASCADES RAPIDS SWIM TEAM Parent & Swimmer Code of Conduct

As a member of the Grand Cascades Rapids Swim Team, Inc. (Rapids) you are part of a swimming organization that believes teamwork, integrity, respect and good sportsmanship are more important than winning. By registering for membership with the team, you agree to follow the rules for behavior and sportsmanship while you are a member of the Grand Cascades Rapids Swim Team, Inc. until you resign your membership with the Rapids.

The Rapids are fortunate to have experienced, enthusiastic and family-oriented coaches working to develop our children into better swimmers, and more importantly, teaching and instilling important life skills. These skills include time-management, self-discipline, empathy for others and sportsmanship.

Your child will reap the benefits of swimming long after his/her participation with the Rapids ends.

As parents, it is absolutely essential that you give our coaching staff the respect and authority they deserve to run our swim team. Our coaches are hired for that purpose, and the Head Coach oversees practices and meet line ups. Our coaching mentors will be on-hand for questions and logistics only and will have no say in placement or events.

The Grand Cascades Rapids Swim Team, Inc. Board reserves the right to dismiss any member, family, or swimmer(s) with/or without cause in the interest of our vision, mission, and objectives.

PART I - PARENTS' CODE of CONDUCT and BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Set the right example for our children by showing respect and common courtesies at all times to the team members, coaches, Rapids Board, competitors, officials, parents, and for all facilities and other property used during practice or competition.
  • Respect the integrity of swim officials by assuming decisions are based on honest, objective evaluations of performance. Only coaches may approach meet officials for clarification of rulings.
  • Demonstrate good sportsmanship during all practices, competitions and team activities. Promote good sportsmanship by setting an example and by helping others to do likewise. Rapids members will win gracefully, lose graciously and congratulate their opponents either way. We are known for shaking hands after every race as this embodies who we are as a family team.
  • Be an active participant in all fundraising events and other team activities .
  • Recognize that Rapids' coaches are or have been swimmers, have been trained, and are up to date on methods based off of USA Swimming so please allow them to coach your child without interference during practices and meets, including not being present on deck during practice or competitions unless you are working at the meet.
  • Meet event requests may only happen when you 'declare' for a meet on Team Unify. Request should be written in the 'Notes' section of the declaration. Please know this is a request only and the final placement is up to the coaches and is not subject to debate.
  • The coaching mentor and deck coach serve as liaisons for questions and logistics. If you have concerns, you will address it with the coaching mentor or deck coach first and then allow him/her to address the appropriate coach, judge and/or official if need be. Final decisions, however, ultimately rest with the appropriate coach, judge and/or official and are not subject to debate.
  • Insist that your child refrain from using alcohol, tobacco, vaping, drugs, other prohibited substances, violence, abusive or foul language, inappropriate sexual conduct, or any other behavior deemed dishonest, discourteous, offensive or disrespectful of others. This includes texting, email, social media, and/or bullying.
  • Personally refrain from tobacco, vaping, drugs, other prohibited substances, violence, abusive or foul language, inappropriate sexual conduct, or any other behavior deemed dishonest, discourteous, offensive or disrespectful of others at any swim team event including practices. This includes texting, email, social media and/or bullying.
  • Assist the coaches in conducting effective practices and team functions by ensuring swimmers arrive and leave on time.

NO direct text, emails, or phone calls with coaches or committee members concerning swim team business. Designated email addresses should be used for swim team concerns.
  • Know your role. Swimmers- Swim/ Coaches- Coach/ Officials- Officiate/ Parents- Parent

  • Get involved. Find a volunteer position you enjoy!
  • Understand that the success of the Grand Cascades Rapids Swim Team, Inc. is in large part dependent upon parent volunteers. Agree to volunteer for at least twelve (12) hours in volunteer positions through the online volunteer sign up system. Understand that you are obligated to work the volunteer positions for which you register. If substitutions must be made, you will find a replacement for your position.
  • Pay your fees on time.
  • Know and uphold Grand Cascades Homeowners rules, regulations, management and directives.

  • Swimmers are expected at all times to follow the directions of the coaching staff, officials and their bull pen parent. Disrespect or failure to obey instructions will not be tolerated and will result in being removed from practice, the bull pen, the swim meet and/or swim team functions.
  • Swimmers are expected to show respect, common courtesies and good sportsmanship at all times to their own team as well as our competitors.
  • Swimmers must commit to meets using Team Unify before the meet deadline.
  • Swimmers are expected to wear Rapids team caps at all practices and team swimsuits and team caps at all swim meets. This displays team pride and also makes it easier to identify swimmers on the blocks and in the water. We encourage this over their club caps for team unity.
  • Swimmers should be an active participant in all team practices, competitions, fundraising events and other team activities.
  • Swimmers will refrain from using alcohol, tobacco, drugs, other prohibited substances, violence, abusive or foul language, inappropriate sexual conduct, or any other behavior deemed dishonest, discourteous, offensive or disrespectful of others. This includes text, email, social media and bullying.

The registering athlete participating with Grand Cascades Rapids Swim Team, Inc. agrees to abide by the guidelines outlined above in addition to those established by the staff. FAILURE TO ADHERE TO THIS CODE OF CONDUCT MAY RESULT IN DISMISAL FROM THE TEAM.

Those dismissed from the team will not be able to participate in any swim team functions (practices, meets, social events, etc.). Those requesting a re-consideration of dismissal must attend a hearing with the Board of Grand Cascades Swim Team and will not be allowed in team functions until after the conclusion of the hearing with the Board. Those dismissed from the team will NOT receive refunds of team fees.

Exhibit “A”

Concussion Awareness

Parent/Participant Concussion Information Sheet: A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that changes the way the brain normally works. A concussion is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth. Even a “ding,” “getting your bell rung,” or what seems to be a mild bump or blow to the head can be serious.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF CONCUSSION?

Signs and symptoms of a concussion can show up right after the injury or may not appear or be noticed until days or weeks after the injury. If an athlete reports one or more symptoms of a concussion listed below after a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body, he or she should be kept out of play the day of the injury and until a health care professional, experienced in evaluating for concussions, says he or she is symptom-free and it is okay to return to play.

Did You Know?

  • Most concussions occur without loss of consciousness.
  • Athletes who have, at any point in their lives, had a concussion have an increased risk for another concussion.
  • Children and teens are more likely to get a concussion and take longer to recover than adults.

SIGNS OBSERVED BY COACHING STAFF SYMPTOMS REPORTED BY ATHLETES

  • Appears dazed or stunned
  • Headache or “pressure” in head
  • Is confused about assignment or position
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Forgets an instruction
  • Balance problems or dizziness
  • Is unsure of game, score, or opponent
  • Double or blurry vision
  • Moves clumsily
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Answers questions slowly
  • Sensitivity to noise
  • Loses consciousness (even briefly)
  • Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy
  • Shows mood, behavior, or personality changes
  • Concentration or memory problems
  • Cannot recall events prior to hit or fall
  • Confusion
  • Cannot recall events after hit or fall
  • Just not “feeling right” or “feeling down”

CONCUSSION DANGER SIGNS
In rare cases, a dangerous blood clot may form on the brain in a person with a concussion and crowd the brain against the skull. An athlete should receive immediate medical attention if after a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or body, he or she exhibits any of the following danger signs:

  • One pupil larger than the other
  • Is drowsy or cannot be awakened
  • A headache that not only does not diminish, but gets worse
  • Weakness, numbness, or decreased coordination
  • Repeated vomiting or nausea
  • Slurred speech
  • Convulsions or seizures
  • Cannot recognize people or places
  • Becomes increasingly confused, restless, or agitated
  • Has unusual behavior
  • Loses consciousness (even a brief loss of consciousness should be taken seriously)

WHY SHOULD AN ATHLETE REPORT THEIR SYMPTOMS?

If an athlete has a concussion, his or her brain needs time to heal. While an athlete’s brain is still healing, he or she is much more likely to have another concussion. Repeat concussions can increase the time it takes to recover. In rare cases, repeat concussions in young athletes can result in brain swelling or permanent damage to their brain. They can even be fatal.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU THINK YOUR ATHLETE HAS A CONCUSSION?

If you suspect that an athlete has a concussion, remove the athlete from play and seek medical attention. Do not try to judge the severity of the injury yourself. Keep the athlete out of play the day of the injury and until a health care professional, experienced in evaluating for concussion, says he or she is symptom-free and it is okay to return to play. Rest is key to helping an athlete recover from a concussion. Exercising or activities that involve a lot of concentration, such as studying, working on the computer, or playing video games, may cause concussion symptoms to reappear or get worse. After a concussion, returning to sports and school is a gradual process that should be carefully managed and monitored by a health care professional. Remember, concussions affect people differently. While most athletes with a concussion recover quickly and fully, some will have symptoms that last for days, or even weeks. A more serious concussion can last for months or longer. It is better to miss one game than the whole season.

For more information on concussions, visit: https://www.cdc.gov/headsup/index.html.
